The idea behind the hit TV show Undercover Boss, is that the CEO/President of well known company goes undercover to see how the company is performing.  The leader puts on disguise and goes to work for a week in his own organization, in ground-level positions. The leader takes on the most basic tasks—working the register, busting the tables, loading the trucks.  He spends time talking with customers and employees to get a sense of how things are “really” going.  The experience is always eye-opening for the leader.  He is able to see where employees and systems are working well and where they are not.  The employees are always shocked to discover that “the new guy” was really their boss.

In a similar way, God—The Creator—stepped out of heaven into His own creation.  He so humbled Himself and assumed the lowest postures and positions of service.  He came in disguise.  The great King was not born—did not live or die—like great kings do.  Sadly, as we read this week, the world did not recognize or receive Him.

But God did not go undercover to “see how things are going” or to “make some adjustments.”  He didn’t come to learn what it’s like to be human or to know His people.  No.  He came so that we might know Him.  God—the Word, the One who was in the beginning—stepped into creation so that we would see the fullness of His grace and the splendor of His glory.
