J. SERIES: TOUCH AND BELIEVE
SESSION 1
JOHN 20.19-23
As we reflect today on the anniversary of 9/11, we remember our nation in the hours immediately following the terrorist attacks. Air traffic was grounded. Businesses and schools closed. America was under curfew. Families huddled together around their TV’s in their living rooms. Behind locked doors. Uncertain of what had happened.
Uncertain of what was to come.
Fear locks our doors. We turn the deadbolt when we are afraid of exposure. We arm our security system when we are afraid of intrusion. Fear has a way of closing the blinds and drawing the curtains. It has a way of hemming us in. Shutting us down. Keeping us contained.
Jesus, the hoped Messiah, was dead. Dead (and now) missing. He had been crucified under Pilate’s order two days ago. He was buried in a tomb in the garden. But that tomb is now empty. His body is gone. His disciples gather behind locked doors. Uncertain of what has (actually) happened.
Uncertain of what is to come.
But Jesus doesn’t leave us in our fear. He doesn’t leave us to cower and crouch. Jesus meets us in our uncertainty, in our anxiety. He identifies Himself and gives us His peace. He shows us His scars and gives us His Spirit. He unlocks the doors of our heart and sends us out confidently—boldly—on mission.
I love your hearts,
Bryan
