The BIG Picture: Session 9
Romans 8.12-17; 1 John 3.1-3

If you have one, take it out:

A Georgia driver’s license.
Look it over. What does it say about you.
Name. Address. Date of birth.
Your gender. Height and weight.
Maybe an organ donor?

Okay, just HOW BAD is your picture?

As you grow up, when you get your first checking account,  when you register for college classes, when you get your cell phone contract, you will find yourself whipping out this card when people ask for your ID. But that card that is tucked away in your wallet isn’t you.  It is a description of you.  It details your key characteristics, hair and eye color, how you sign your name.  But it isn’t you—your true self—your essence.

It is easy to confuse our identity with our attributes.

For instance, it is easy to confuse WHO we are with WHAT we do.  This is a big one, especially in the American culture. We often identify ourselves by our key interest, “I am a quarterback,” “I am a BETA Club Scholar,” “I am a photographer…” We confuse our identity with our calling.

But the Bible is clear about who and what we are. It is GOD who gives us our identity. When all other callings, titles and interests are removed, we still are—we still exist.  We still have value and purpose.  We still have meaning.  All of these things are rooted and flourish in Christ’s death and resurrection.
